Research and Development Series

Although certain Longevity research scientists believe we are not far from extending human lifespan to between 150 and 200 years, not everyone would want to live that long, but I'm fairly sure that most of us would prefer to live healthier for longer. Growing old and becoming phsyically and/or mentally disabled is a poor choice.

But the supplement industry is poorly funded as is longevity research, and this reflects in the cost of such alternative therapies.

So one purpose of this wiki is to doccument my own adventures into longevity and health and to discover cost effective, low priced methods of extending human health/lifespan.

To the lay-person with little or no medcial background, like myself, some of the concepts presented here may seem daunting at first, but I have stuck to the basics and tried to present them in an easy to understand format, and the reader is urged to gain at least the basic understanding of Mitochondria as presented here, as they play a significant role in ageing, disease and death.

My own journey started 4 years ago at the end of 2019 when my health was not so good. I started taking NMN, which will be discussed later, and gradually increased my stack, and although I have achieved impressive results I believe those results can and should be assisted by other means.

We know for sure that exercise and intermittent fasting can be beneficial but I have done a lot of research into other alternative therapies such as Light therapy, Pemf, Upemf and Water.

Where possible I have included cheap but powerful construction details.

In order to understand the methodology of reverse ageing techniques there are certain key words one should be familiar with, and I have provided the minimum amount of data on each below.

Basics[edit | edit source]

Mitochondria, thought to be of bacterial origin, are the powerhouses of our cells. They create ATP, which is the only energy our bodies can use. When the Mitochondria go wrong, we go wrong. They are the only organelles that have two membranes, the outer membrane and the inner membrane. The outer membrane is permeable while the inner membrane only allows certain materials to go through.Living cells cannot use oxygen for energy but they have food, Mitochondria can use oxygen for energy but they have no food,so an exchange is done through the intermembraneous space (space between membranes) via transmembraneous proteins, the most important being the VDAC protein (voltage dependent anion channel).

This protein plays an important role in communication with the nucleus, and all orders of the cells that come from the nucleus are supervised by the mitochondria giving them the upper hand on the nucleus to control all the cells biological functions. These functions could be done via the recently discovered mitochondrial-nuclear axis. Studies show the disturbance of this axis would lead to catastrophic diseases that range from aging problems to cancer transformation.

Take away message: Mitochondria power our cells and our cells feed mitochondria. This information exchange is done across the antegrade and retrograde axis via the vdac1 protein. If this exchange is blocked we start to show signs of ageing which can lead to disease.

Sirtuins, or silent information regulators facillitate the exchange of electrons.

Pathways: we explore several longevity pathways:

  • Mtor
  • Insulin resistance
  • AMPK
  • Sirtuin

Apoptosis is one method the body uses to get rid of unneeded or abnormal cells, also known as programmed cell death. It is thought this process is blocked in cancer cells.

Autophagy is a highly conserved eukaryotic cellular recycling process and plays an important role in cell survival and maintenance.

Pemf or pulsed electormagnetic therapy is used to repair or activate electron channels.

Light therapy is used in a variety of ways and we will look further into that later, as well as it's combined use in treating disease.

Supplements[edit | edit source]

I have explored and am still exploring quite a number of supplements to increase lifespan. Extending lifespan includes staying healthier for longer. Some supplements are quite expensive and can be out of reach for many, so I try to narrow things down to those I consider the most effective and least money. It's not always possible to compormise cost over health.

For this reason I think it's essential that readers understand the basics of mitochodrial function and amino acids etc that are utilised by the mitochondria and to incorporate that knowledge into PEMF and light therapy.
